For glam 'Idol,' his 15 minutes of fame still ticking

Factions of the pop-music scene have grown steadily hysterical in recent months, making over-the-top dynamics an instant means, not a hard-earned end, so much so that the glitter and gossip over a TV singing competition's second-place finisher can be fast eclipsed by Lady Gaga video epics and impossibly well-timed choral numbers on Glee.

Yet Adam Lambert, American Idol runner-up, atypical fashion plate, seemed to pack as many thematic metaphors (and costume changes) as possible into a 70-minute set last night in the Lifestyle Communities Pavilion.

He strutted down a half-flight of stairs wearing a top hat, leather bellbottoms and a purple coat with three-foot-long fringe on each sleeve. Images ranging from snakes, wolves, lightning and neon signs flashed on a backdrop.

Lasers pulsated while two male dancers gyrated briefly with a shoeless Lambert, a possible effect from a suggestive showing at the 2009 American Music Awards.

The motley fashions and stage aesthetics were likely enough to satisfy the 28-year-old's rabid fan base, known as "Glamberts."

Processing the spectacle, though, could be puzzling.

After all, what separates performance art from carefully staged eccentricity?

Glamberts, naturally, will be quick to defend. Lambert, no doubt, was Idol's strongest talent last season, and his unconventional voice ably shifted from growls and coos to high-pitched wails. (In particular: the orchestral ballad Soaked, written by Matt Bellamy of Muse, came through as theatrical as his diamond-encrusted cape.)

Yet the songwriting duties from his For Your Entertainment debut CD were left mainly to a host of industry heavyweights.

Just as varied was the set list, which ranged from a Middle Eastern-influenced take on Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire (as performed on Idol) and thumping electronic fare (Fever, Strut).

Upbeat rock tunes, including Music Again and Sure Fire Winners, found Lambert at his best, toning down the dramatics a bit in favor of kitschy fun.

The finale of If I Had You, a sort of Bon Jovi-meets-Scissor Sisters vibe, turned the venue into a guitar-fueled dance party that best showcased his appeal.

The evening closed with an encore of Tears for Fears' Mad World, another Idol flashback and a reminder that Lambert has always leaned on outside influences to bolster his identity.

Lambert is still taking shape. Doubters take a cue from his recent single Whataya Want from Me, performed last night: Just don't give up. He's working it out.
