THR: Speaking of Idol, what's your impression of Adam Lambert?

George: He came to a party I had in London and was lovely. I think he has a great voice and an incredible range. It's phenomenal. It's special. And I think the glam thing adds to that. It gives him an edge.

THR: Since Idol, Adam has been pretty open about his sexuality, do you wish you could have been more up front about yours at the height of your career?

George: I think you do things in your own time. My family knew I was gay when I was 15, long before I got famous. But it's a very different thing coming out to your family and coming out to the universe. That's a big step. Maybe without me, there wouldn't be Adam Lambert. Without Bowie there, wouldn't be me. Without Quentin Crisp, there wouldn't have been Bowie. So everything is part of a big daisy chain. I think I did what I did at the time. I think it was powerful in some respect. A lot of people come up to me all the time and say thank you for helping me to be who I am. So my thing wasn't just about sexuality. My thing was about anyone who felt different; anyone who felt out of place. Being gay was one part of it.

How much money does Adam for his music?

Recently, a link to a very interesting article was posted in the news thread. It was titled, "Where To Buy Music To Get More Cents On The Dollar To The Musician" from NPR Music. http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2011/....o-the-music ian

This is one of the few articles that actually provides accurate information about music sales and how retail channels work.

It inspired me to put together a summary of how it works for an RCA artist like Adam.

1. CDs and physical music products - RCA produces the product and distributes it to the major retailers who buy directly from RCA like Amazon and Best Buy, jobbers who service major retailers like Walmart and Walgreens, and to third party distributors who service smaller retailers.

The retailer pays the wholesale cost of about $5 to $9 per unit no matter what they sell the CD for. And the retailer retains the margin.

So if Best Buy wants to sell FYE, they buy the albums from RCA for about $8 and they sell it for $13 -- they keep $5 to cover their expenses and make a profit on the deal. If the CDs do not sell they can return them to RCA. (After expenses, Best Buy would be lucky to net $0.40 per unit sold.)

Each album has a set wholesale price – somewhere between five and seven dollars.... the album will pay (as with digital sales, the musicians get a portion of that wholesale price that depends on their contract with the label).

"If you have a discounted album in a physical retail setting, generally, not always but generally, the record label has paid for that," Barger says. "Price and positioning, listening stations, weekly circulars — all of these things can be charged back to the record label to position the record better in the store."

Sometimes those discounts trade in higher sales for a lower per-album return to the band. When the National's last album, 2010's High Violet, came out, the band's label paid more for placement than it had with the band's previous album, 2008's Boxer. Nearly a year later, even though sales for High Violet are stronger, Barger says, "At this point in the album cycle, we've actually earned more per album from Boxer than we have from High Violet, due to the spend over time."
2. Digital music -- RCA gets between 60 and 75 cents per digital track and between $5 and $9 per digital album sold in the US on iTunes and Amazon. (Generally, the higher the retail price, the higher the label's share.) Adam and the songwriters/producers get some percentage in royalties based on their contracts. There is no way to know what the royalty share is for digital music.

3. Buy from the Band at a Venue --- the venue will charge a fee for the sale, usually $5 to $7 per unit, plus the label gets the wholesale cost for the CD. So if Adam sells his CD for $20 at a concert venue, the venue gets around $7, RCA gets wholesale costs of about $8, and Adam and his sales agents get the remaining $5 per unit. Of course, Adam does get a royalty on the sale of the CD too. It's a safe bet that this is the best way to get money to an artist.

4. Other revenue sources ---

Streaming media -- royalty rates to the musicians for 2011 is $0.0017 per song. Songwriters also get a royalty that is a percentage of the licensing fees paid by the site in proportion to how often her song is performed and how many people were listening.

NEW YORK, February 17, 2011 – The 2011 Billboard Music Awards will air on ABC live from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, in partnership with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. The announcement was made today by Richard D. Beckman, CEO of Prometheus Global Media, which owns Billboard. The show is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 22nd, 2011 and will become one of the most important music forums for artists on television. The live broadcast will be co-executive produced by Mr. Beckman and Don Mischer of Don Mischer Productions.

“This show marks the first of several broadcast platforms we plan to build around the Billboard franchise,” said Beckman. “We have an incredible network partner and with Don Mischer, one of the finest producers in the world. We look forward to entertaining music fans with Billboard’s own rendition of a televised celebration of music.”

Real artist popularity will be recognized on stage by objective measures—capturing pure fan support through Billboard’s legendary chart rankings. The Billboard Music Awards will take a holistic look at artist performance based on key fan interactions with music, including album, single and digital sales, touring, streaming and social interactions on MySpace, Facebook and many of the other most popular online destinations for music. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and it’s data partners.

The awards will be based on the reporting period of February 28, 2010 through March 1, 2011.
Top artists will be recognized in a variety of genres, for example R&B, Rap, Pop, Country, Rock, Latin and Alternative. Such recognition will be determined and authenticated by Billboard.

Ồ, thật ra tôi chắc rằng các bạn cũng sẽ k bấn đến thế bởi vì tôi biết các bạn đã thừa biết tin vui này rồi. Xin lỗi tôi phải làm như đó là 1 tin giật gân...vì tôi chưa bao giờ đưa tin nào giật gân cả =))

LINDA PERRY: Hmmm… I still don’t understand that. That’s a whole other interview! I honestly am still baffled by the closet thing. I don’t get it. There’s nothing you can tell me that would make me understand why people feel the need to hide who they are – under any circumstance. So, I can’t comprehend it therefore I can’t even answer it.

Last week when Adam Lambert stood on the Red Carpet of the American Idol finale holding his boyfriend Sauli Koskinen’s hand, many fans heralded it as a groundbreaking moment. An act of courage and conviction, and one that was symbolic of Adam’s bravery and the change of which he has been a part. While I agree that the moment was significant and worthy of celebration, I see it as not so much a courageous act in itself, but rather as Adam’s reward for a thousand acts of courage over the last two years.

Two years ago when Adam left the Idol stage covered in the confetti of his opponent’s victory, he stepped into a media storm of unprecedented intensity that would have been any aspiring artist’s dream. Unfortunately for a man who wanted to focus on making music, much of the interest centered mainly on speculation about his sexuality and then, once he had answered the question in grand style, on revisiting the subject again and again. One would have thought that an openly gay man had never been signed to a major record label in the U.S.! Oh wait…

In the two years between the finales of Season 8 and Season 10, Adam has had a long road and much work to do. He’s had to patiently answer questions over and over again about the “gay gay gay gay.” He’s had to put up with DJs asking for kisses and makeup tips. He’s had to calmly talk people down from their AMA freakout. He’s had to work his ass off and rally his fans’ support while never letting on what an uphill battle it has been to get his music played on U.S. radio. He’s had to endure the snarky comments of reviewers and the hateful words of anonymous online posters. He’s put up with tasteless jokes from interviewers and protests to a couple of his concerts and misguided advice from “fans.”

In the past two years Adam has shown his courage in great and small ways again and again. From choosing to incorporate a man-on-man kiss into Glam Nation to navigating Malaysian opposition to his show, Adam has shown a knack for both pushing boundaries and finding compromise. Adam is both part of a greater change in society and one of the change agents. Without loud proclamations or statements, he has made it clear that he is not interested in being anything other than himself. I don’t think he realized when he started on this journey how long it would take for people to get past his sexuality. And by no means is the battle over. There aren’t enough others out there in order for Adam not to stand out. But finally, articles referring to his sexuality are more the exception than the rule, and the most recent press refers to Adam’s relationship in the same terms with which heterosexual relationships are discussed. This is no accident—it is due to Adam’s tirelessness and persistence in reminding people that he is a singer, an entertainer, a most importantly, a human being just like them.

So last week when Adam stood on the Red Carpet hand-in-hand with his boyfriend, it was not an act of defiance nor a political statement. It was his reward. It had taken Adam hundreds of days and tens of thousands of miles to reach the point where could he hold the hand of the man he loves and smile into cameras with nothing but pride and happiness in his eyes, and to finally walk a gauntlet of microphones talking about what truly matters to him and to us.

His music. His dreams. His future.

Are you 'Idol's' next Adam Lambert?

Pre-registration for "American Idol" auditions is July 6-7 at Petco Park

Are you the next Adam Lambert? Or, rather, do you think you're the next Adam Lambert (or Jennifer Hudson), and you want the world to know it?

Then head on down to Petco Park next week, where pre-registration for "American Idol" auditioners will begin at 7 a.m. on July 6 and continue until 8 a.m. on July 8, the same day the first round of auditions will be held at Petco for the upcoming 11th season of "American Idol." Those who make the cut will be asked to return to Petco Park for the second round of auditions, July 9-11.

(July 6, incidentally, just happens to be the same day that this year's "American Idols LIVE! 2011" concert tour debuts. However, there is no tour date scheduled in San Diego.)

Those hoping to audition must be registered and in line on July 8 by, well, no official announcement has been made yet. But last year it was 8 a.m. in each city that held an audition and indications are that will be the case here this year as well. Check the "American Idol" web site for updated information.

This marks the second time auditions have been held in San Diego. The first was in 2007 at Mission Valley's Qualcomm Stadium, where approximately 12,000 auditioners from across San Diego County and a number of other states turned out. The move to Petco Park this year should be welcome news for downtown restaurants, bars and ice cream and gelato vendors.

A word of caution: If your motivation to audition is to meet one or more of the judges from the "Idol" TV show, none of them will be present, at least not for the first round on July 8. It is not yet known if any of the judges will be at Petco for any or all of the second round of auditions. Nor has it been officially announced which judges from last season will be on board again next season. This has led to idle speculation by some that Ozzy Osbourne and Lady Gaga could be in line to replace Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, should they opt not to return to the judges table for the show's 2012 season).

Pre-registration (which, for all intents and purposes, is the same as registration, only, um, earlier) will be continuous. That means aspiring "Idol" participants have two days -- and nights -- next week to head down to Petco, sign up and see if they can make their dreams of music stardom (or at least TV stardom) become a reality.

But there are some restrictions. If you are -- as of June 26, 2011 -- 14 or younger, or 29 or older, you are not eligible to audition. Those auditioning must be "legal U.S. citizens or a permanent U.S. resident who is eligible to work full-time in the U.S."

All auditioners must bring two forms of ID -- for example, a driver's license and a birth certificate or passport. If you are under the age of 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. (To read the 5-page "Idol Information" handout, click here.) Each auditioner will also have to sign a 7-page personal release form (which you can read by clicking here.).

For better and worse, there are no requirements to demonstrate any musical ability when you register. That's what the auditions are for.

But, assuming you make it past the auditions to the semi-final rounds of "Idol" in November and December in Los Angeles, there will be many other rules -- 5 pages worth, which you can read by clicking here. (Hmm. Could "American Idol's" real goal be to help spur greater literacy? Or, perhaps, to boost enrollment in contract-law classes?)

But perhaps the most important thing to remember if you audition is to use common sense: Memorize several songs and be ready to sing them a cappella. Bring lyrics sheets -- the first round of auditions are not a memorization test. And if you get really nervous, remember my grandmother's savvy advice to help anyone overcome nerves.

Namely, before you begin any public performance, look at the people you are about to perform for, and imagine all of them sitting on the toilet. Your stage fright should evaporate, pronto.

“I had American Idol's Adam Lambert show up to my dinky little weekly Sunday night gig at the Turf Supper Club this last weekend,” local singer/songwriter J.D. Boucharde tells the Reader. “He got up and did a song with me, and brought the friggin' house down.”

“I don't watch television, and I sure as hell don't watch American Idol. Don't get me on my soapbox about America's obsession with turning every worthy thing, and even a good many non-worthy things, into a competition, fer God's sakes. But I sat there and talked to him for a half hour or so. Cool kid. I've known his dad and his dad's wife for a few years. They live in South Park: really, really good people, and I sat and talked with the three of them in the corner of the restaurant.”

Boucharde says Lambert went all but unnoticed. “Not one person that I saw before he got up to sing even recognized him. I asked him if he wanted to get up and sing ‘Mad World,’ which, apparently, he sang on the show when he was competing. I only know because, after he did, I started getting all sorts of requests then to cover that song, which I'd been covering for years.”

After getting an “Okay” from Lambert, “I got back to the piano and I introduced him. I look out, and everybody's looking around like they're in a dream. Adam Lambert's here? HERE? And the place went crazy!”

“I guess I sort of assumed that, at least in the public's eye, which can no longer hold its beloved gaze on anything longer than a few minutes, he had sort of come and gone. And, since I don't watch TV, how the hell would I know, anyway? But he's still this household word. People simply love the guy.”

Can music be gay? It’s a question Time magazine asked in 2008. If music can be black or female or Latin then yes, it certainly can be gay. I write, sing, and produce a genre I like to call “gay pop,” which is R&B/Dance music that would be played on the radio but comes from the perspective of an openly gay man—and all that entails.

After 11 years of putting out “gay pop,” I still believe what I do is universal. The dream of doing it on the biggest level—Madison Square Garden, Grammys, the cover of Rolling Stone—still burns inside me. As a child, I believed I was destined for superstardom, but grew up feeling the pain and shame of living in a world that didn’t accept me.
Maybe that’s why when my co-producer told me to take off what he thinks is the gayest song I have on my new album, I actually considered it—even after 11 years of being an openly gay artist. Could my rainbow flag-waving be what’s holding me back and preventing me from fulfilling these big dreams? Am I ghettoizing myself? Maybe if I just de-gay myself a little, I would achieve the kind of mainstream success I hope for.

My producer had a convincing argument. He told me that nobody was going to put in the $850,000 it takes to get one song on the radio if there’s any risk involved. He said that no matter how talented I may be, there are other artists who don’t have the “baggage”–especially in this current music industry that is spending only 20 percent of what it used to, to break an artist. He said he wanted to see me have a long career and doesn’t want me to limit myself in case someone with money wants to invest in me.

As we were having this debate, my producer asked me to join him to pick up his 11-year-old son from swim team. His son got in the car and told his father that his teammates were picking on him and calling him gay because he was last in the race. He quickly came to his own defense and said, “I don’t play for speed, Dad, I play for distance!” He then told his father that another kid knocked him off the elliptical bike at the gym—and that kid had called him gay last week. My producer told his son he would call the coach when he got home. But right before getting back to the house, almost as an aside, he asked, “What are you doing that’s causing these boys to say these things to you?” His son responded, “I don’t know, Dad!”

I never had the guts to tell my parents that anyone was calling me gay in school because I was too afraid that it might have tipped them off—as if the Annie dollhouse I loved to play with weren’t already. In the orthodox Jewish household I grew up in, there didn’t seem to be a chance that my parents would ever accept me—not when my rabbis in school were telling me it was a sin. The day-to-day living in secrecy, having to hide who I was in school and then coming home and still being made to feel like there was something wrong with me, definitely chipped away at my self-esteem. If my adult self could have told that little boy that I was wrong about my parents and that they loved me enough to work through their homophobia to fully accept their son, I could have saved myself so much suffering. Of course, I’m one of the lucky ones who had parents that ultimately came to accept me for who I am.

Still, building back that self-esteem is a daily challenge for me—especially when I’m told to this day that I may be “too gay.” In a piece I wrote in 2007 for The Advocate, "It’s Not Easy Being a Gay Pop Star” I wrote about how Sony told me I was “too gay” for the gay record label they were developing (a label that is only releasing Kathy Griffin’s comedy albums at this point). In pop music, “Ur So Gay,” to quote a Katy Perry song, is as big an insult as you can get.

Whoopi Goldberg defended me against the bullies of gay pop when I went on her radio show in 2008. Her producer initially told me I was “not mainstream enough” to be on her show; a term that I’ve come to know as code. Whoopi and her long-time partner Tom Leonardis fought to get me on the show. When that same producer quickly tried to usher me out after the first segment, Whoopi gave her a piercing look that could have tamed a lion and said, “He’s staying for another segment.” Whoopi must have known what was going on considering her own unique journey in show-business breaking barriers. She even said on the air that I was changing the face of pop music much like Obama was changing the face of the presidency.

That’s why I want to embrace this term “gay pop.” Not only because I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, but also because it was a term used by the music editor of Entertainment Weekly when I sent in my last album for review. The email response I got was “the thing is that even though EW is basically the house that homos built, we don't really have anyone on the print side who covers/covets gay pop.”

But I covet gay pop. There’s power in reclaiming the term and opening up the definition to include all the ways gay people have created and influenced our musical culture. Like the way Beyonce struts down a set of stairs like only a fierce queen could have taught her to, or the way Gaga borrows her style from the NYC '90s gay club scene, or the first half of Madonna’s entire career. I didn’t need Ricky Martin to come out to claim “Livin' La Vida Loca” as a quintessential gay pop song (the fact that it was written by openly gay hit-maker Desmond Child notwithstanding).

I’ve been trying to convince industry big-wigs for over 15 years that housewives and teenage girls couldn’t care less how gay a pop star is. The huge platform of American Idol proved that to be true with Adam Lambert. And his concert I went to in New York was the most exciting and brazenly flamboyant pop show I’ve seen since Boy George. Even white gay rapper Cazwell got over a million hits on YouTube with a video filled with go-go boys from the NYC gay scene.

This is gay pop in 2011—and I think we should claim it all. It is no more limiting or ghettoizing than a gay TV show like Glee or a gay movie like Brokeback Mountain. It’s been over 20 years since superstar acts like George Michael, Melissa Etheridge, and Elton John have come out, and even though a celebrity coming out is still big news, it has gotten better. I will never get to see the world the way it might have been if we hadn’t lost so many greats to AIDS—especially a brilliant and flamboyant musical artist like Sylvester—but I still have the privilege of walking in the path he left behind.

I decided to leave the gay song in question on my album after all. Not enough artist’s music speaks to a defining political and social struggle. I put the phrase “don’t ask, don’t tell” in one of my songs before seeing it repealed. I’ve written songs about the down-low and gender identity. I get to play the role of a sexy gay pop star, the kind I never had growing up. I have fans that tell me my music has changed their lives and helped them get through high school and through coming out after 50. I’ve been honored to sing my love song “Bashert (Meant To Be)” at four gay weddings and as of today I can sing it loud at a gay wedding in New York and it be legal.

It seems that with every album I release, I have to remember that this is the gift. After having that moment of doubt, I needed my co-producer’s 11-year-old son to remind me. He could not have said it better when he told his dad, “I’m not playing for speed, I’m playing for distance.”

Thật lòng mà nói, tôi khá là thất vọng, khi tôi phải liên lạc cho bạn tôi một biên tập viên ở San Diego và gửi cho anh ấy một cái mail viết cực ngắn gọn và súc tích về cau chuyện này, tôi đã nói đến một vài thứ trong cái thư đó mà tôi mong anh ấy k có in nó ra (như việc tôi ghét xem TV, cũng như sự thật rằng mọi ng`, nhưng mọi ng` dường như k phải “fan cứng” của cậu ấy, như bọn họ, dường như k biết đến Adam nữa.
Và điều đó khiến tôi có vẻ như,…….uhm thô lỗ?! Cõ lẽ thế! Đó như mấy thứ vớ vẩn liên quan trí tưởng tượng của con ng` mà thường rất có ích cho các bài báo.

Ngược lại, Adam là một ng` rất thân thiện, cởi mở và quả là một con ng` đáng mến. Không tự mãn, cậu ấy quả là một anh chàng tuyệt với về mọi mặt. Khi mà tôi hỏi rằng liệu cậu ấy có muốn đứng lên hát k? thì tôi đã nghĩ trong đầu rằng câu trả lời của cậu ấy sẽ là k vì dù sao hát ở cái nơi bé nhỏ này thì làm sao mà hay ho bằng các sân khấu mà cậu ấy đã từng biểu diễn..và tôi hoàn toàn hiểu đc điều đó. Nhưng k! cậu ấy đáp lại lời đề nghị của tôi:” Tất nhiên là đc”.

Và tôi k hề phóng đại phản ứng của mọi ng` lúc đó. Họ dường như bị choáng váng. Tôi nói tên cậu ây, và mọi ng` đứng đó im lặng, họ nghĩ rằng tôi đang cố chơi họ hay sao đó, và rồi khi Adam bước lên sân khấu, tất cả mọi ng`, đàn ông, phụ nữa, chỉ đứng đó, há hốc mồm, dường như họ không thể tin đc vào mắt mình. Tôi bắt đầu chơi bản Mad World và cầm lấy cái mic, rồi Adam bảo rằng “chậm lại một tí” tôi làm theo lời cậu ấy nói “chậm thêm tí nữa” và rồi cậu ấy đã HÁT MỘT CÁCH QUÁ TUYỆT VỚI, cậu ấy xướng đc tất cả các nốt cao một cách hoàn hảo, và khi kết thúc nơi đó như vừa có nhóm U2 đến biểu diễn vậy, tôi đã có ấn tượng mạnh với phản ứng của Adam fan-PHẢN ỨNG CỦA CHÍNH CÁC BẠN với một buổi diễn k phải trên TV. Tôi tự hỏi rằng liệu rằng mọi-ng`-còn-biết-anh-ấy-là-một-nghệ-sĩ-nữa-hay-k? nhưng mọi ng` ở trang này rất tuyệt, và phản ứng của các bạn với bài báo cũng rất nhiệt tình.

Và điều cuối cùng, như một bài kiểm tra với Adam, một con người, ngay vừa khi cậu ấy hát xong Mad World, có một anh chàng nào đó đã say, liên tục làm phiền Adam, anh ta ôm cậu ấy, gào vào mặt Adam. Và tôi biết rằng đêm nay, đâu đó trên thế giới này đã xuất hiện thêm một ng` hâm mộ Adam Lambert.
